What is Astrology?   

 

    Welcome to the richly symbolic and fulfilling world of Astrology!  You are in for an exciting journey where you will awaken to new truths and increasingly identify and express your highest potential.  The more we are in tune with the energies of our natal birthchart, the more our destiny is in our own hands.  The old saying..."As Above, So Below" simply means that we are all interconnected energetically.  All that is occurring "up there" is mirrored "down here" on Earth.  This interconnectedness implies that there is a sense of divine order and purpose in our universe and in each in every one of us.  This sense of interconnectedness has been sadly diluted in our modern, high tech society which not only discounts the intuitive, it allows the needs of certain individual egos to outweigh the needs of the greater collective..  Astrology is re-emerging to awaken us to these important times of transformation in this millennium.  The study of celestial activity and its effects upon the planet which we live provide a quantum leap in consciousness where we learn that "As Above, So Below" is not just a theory... it's a metaphysical law that leads us to our true selves.

 

    NATAL Astrology is an ancient science with a very long and fascinating history.  Natal Astrology defined is the construction and analysis of the horoscope for an individual organism which has a precise moment of birth or commencement.  The birthchart is a 360 degree circle  which is a map of the heavens at the exact moment we are born.   The circle represents the feminine model of wholeness or completion.  In Astrology, the circular birthchart symbolizes our individual quest for wholeness and fulfillment on planet Earth.  I like to call it “the soul’s curriculum for this lifetime”.  It has also been described as a personal mandala, a map of the human psyche or the karmic destiny of an individual.  All the energies and potential of that special moment that we chose to be born (on a soul level) are encoded within our cells.  This cellular imprint of all the potential which our soul has decided to manifest in this lifetime begins at the moment of our birth.  As we grow and mature we receive "programming" from our parents which provide the psychological foundation our souls need to fulfill their destinies.  What does this mean?  Well, the keyword here is POTENTIAL.  Even though an  astrologer may clearly see a particular pattern of development symbolized in your birthchart, YOU, the chart owner, are a co-creator of your destiny.  An astrologer cannot readily see the level of consciousness an individual is vibrating at.  In other words, a highly spiritual individual may respond to stressful life events in a different manner than is typical or probable.

 

    Learning Astrology is like learning a new, foreign language.  Once you learn it, it makes total sense!   The first thing to understand is that everything in our world is energetic in nature…the planets and signs are energetic expressions of fire, earth, air and water.  The physical substance from which the world is created consists of these four elements which also may be called four variations of energetic vibrations.  Their modes of expression may be cardinal (active, initiating), fixed (resolute and determined) or mutable (adaptable and changeable).   The basic building blocks are PLANETS, SIGNS, HOUSES AND ASPECTS.  The planets represent WHAT is expressed; the signs represent HOW it is expressed.  The houses represent WHERE it is expressed and the aspects represent how all the planetary “sub personalities” which make up the whole of you…get along with each other.  There are 10 planets called the SUN, MOON, MERCURY, VENUS, MARS, JUPITER, SATURN, URANUS, NEPTUNE AND PLUTO.  A very important addition to the Astrological world is a planetoid called CHIRON discovered in 1977.  I use it in my analysis with clients and  find it very revealing.   Each planet represents a different psychological urge which may be expressed through one of the 12 zodiac signs from Aries to Pisces.  The 12 houses in the horoscope are a mathematical way to divide up the sky into different departments of your life experience.  These areas range from your public persona all the way to your expression of a spiritual path and everything in between.

 

    I will use a few examples from my own chart to clarify the above concepts.  I was born with Jupiter in Pisces in the 7th house of my horoscope.  In astrological language, my psychological urge to expand, philosophize and seek meaning (Jupiter) is expressed through the energy of compassion, transcendence, dreaminess and spirituality (Pisces).  I especially need to express this urge to expand spiritually through my significant partnerships and my relationship with the public (7th house).  In another example, my psychological need to relate, value and love (Venus) is expressed through the energy of depth, intensity, passion and perceptiveness (Scorpio).  I most need to express my urge for beauty or harmony in my home, hearth or inner foundation (4th house).  Now this is a very basic translation.  The next step would be to analyze the aspects my Jupiter and Venus make to my other planetary voices and what houses they rule in my horoscope to give a more complete picture of how my Venus and Jupiter sub personalities contribute to my wholeness or fulfillment.   Do I feel blocked and frustrated in these areas of my life?  (indicated by challenging aspects such as squares, in conjuncts and oppositions) or do I enjoy a sense of easy flow in these areas?
