Please note that there are a wealth of tarot decks to choose from, as well as tarot spreads to answer a particular question.  The following spread was chosen as a basic custom spread for my client.  Tarot spreads can range from one card to 25 cards.

My client Janet was wondering if she would ever be ready to write a mystery novel she has been pondering over for the last twelve months or so.  She has the plot firmly implanted in her mind, though she has not written anything other than a basic outline.  Her question of the tarot was as follows..."Will I ever write my novel?"

I used a five card spread as follows...

1. PAST  5 of cups            2. PRESENT  princess of wands      3.  FUTURE  8 of wands

4. OBSTACLES  7 of wands             5. LIKELY OUTCOME   Emperor

1.  The five of cups in the past position suggests that Janet has experienced some emotional sadness, regret or disappointment that has interfered with the actual writing of her book.  The suit of cups in the tarot always symbolize matters near and dear to our hearts, such as love and relationships.  Perhaps, Janet's relationship with her significant other has not been emotionally fulfilling or supportive of her cherished desire to write her book.  Possibly, she has had to deal with depression or a loss of some kind that deters carving out time for herself.  The number 5 in numerology indicates challenges and tests that take out us out of the static rigidity of the number 4.  The cups left standing in this card suggest that not all was bleak and emotionally barren.  In fact, I asked Janet if she had two children at home that brought her much joy and contentment.  She corroborated that indeed, she did have two children whom she adores.  However, their youthful demands are exhausting and deter her from finding time to herself.  Furthermore, Janet explained to me that her husband has been depressed for quite some time and unwilling to address the cause or origin of this depression.  His moodiness often results in less help with the children, which Janet has found emotionally distressing.  I then explained to Janet that she is now transitioning out of this period of emotional doldrums into a more productive and fulfilling phase in her life.

2.  The princess of wands in the present position attests to Janet's new found feeling of excitement and wonder.  This princess of wands is a wonderful pictorial representation of how Janet feels about her book idea!  This tarot card symbolizes passionate excitement, new ideas and fiery inspiration.  Janet truly desires (wands) to write this book.  It is not just a pipe dream!  When she thinks about this book, she is filled with childlike enthusiasm and spontaneity.  Wands are symbolic of fire energy which is yang and bursting forth with new ideas and messages in their early stages.  Janet is presently in a position to start making new contacts professionally and developing her communication and writing skills.  Now is the time to start making some earnest efforts in making her dream a reality.  I suggested that she contact other authors and publishers to start networking (princess of wands).  She can use the positive enthusiasm of the princess of wands to start researching what she will need to do to get started.  This princess card promises promising new contacts and openhearted communications.

3.  The eight of wands in the future position is a green light for action!  There is no doubt in my mind that Janet will move beyond the present "page stage" and make things happen ambitiously.  Here we have the element of fire again (wands).  Eight in numerology is a powerful, productive and regenerative number.  Eight of wands is symbolic of heat, movement and living in the fast lane, so to speak.  Janet will be "inflamed" with new ideas for her book and she will not be able to write them down fast enough!  Once she gets started, there is no stopping her.  Her strength and passion will prod her forward to follow her bliss and move beyond the past limitations of the five of cups.  The future looks like a promising time to promote her skills and her book.

4.  The seven of wands in Janet's obstacles position is very interesting.  The number seven in numerology represents solitude, taking risks and exploration.  Janet will need to set boundaries to carve out the hours of  solitude needed to write her book, without constant distractions.  Janet will need to assert herself in areas of time management.  Because this card falls in her obstacles position, Janet may experience difficulty in taking a stand and saying "No, I can't do that right now.  I need to write for two hours today."  She will need to stand strong in the face of opposition and constant demands and take the initiative in her own home.  The demands will not go away.  She will need to resolve a few conflicts along the way and rise above other's limiting dogmas!  The seven of wands suggests she must cultivate courage, endurance and pure tenacity to complete this book.  It also suggests that she can do this.  She can rise above everyday demands through sheer resolution and careful planning.

5.  The likely outcome card is the Emperor.  This is an auspicious and powerful card for a likely positive outcome.  The Emperor is one of the major arcana cards (22 out of 78 tarot cards which depict greater spiritual truths and major life developments).  Look at the Emperor closely.  Can you feel his courage, confidence, strength and success?  The Emperor represents transforming creative ideas into a tangible and solid foundation, hence, success!  He represents our ability to create order out of chaos.  He is symbolic of successful and intellectual reasoning skills.  He is in control and in a position of well earned leadership.  He is the master of his own fate.  The Emperor is a most fortunate card for new business ventures because it indicates that hard work has led to a solid and secure foundation...dreams have become a reality.  Janet will most likely take control of her life and manifest her book, which in the end, will command respect and admiration from others.

Good luck Janet!
