"..Guidance and overall direction of my life"

My client Anne was feeling lethargic and disillusioned with her life at the time she requested a tarot reading.  She complained of anxiety and vague fears which she had trouble verbalizing to me.  She also explained that she and her husband Brian were bickering quite a bit lately. Brian was dealing with work (possible relocation) and health issues and the possibility of moving from their newly renovated home.  Anne was willing to move, yet she feared the repercussions of the change on her three children...ages 10, 8 and 4.  In addition, Brian's parents were dealing with significant health issues.  If they moved, they would not be able to visit them as often.  She said she would feel "guilty" about that.

After our initial discussion, Anne decided that she was looking for "overall direction, guidance and wisdom about where her life was headed."  We decided to use the 5 card Direction spread from authors Trish MacGregor and Phyllis Vega's book called Power Tarot.

Anne chose a beautiful Native American themed tarot deck called Vision Quest by Gayan S. Winter and Jo Dose (see cards above).  The spread was as follows:

 1) Current life direction             2) The lesson you are learning

3) What you are moving towards

4) long term objective                 5) What will help you maintain your long term objective

 1) Five of Air  (5 of Swords in a traditional tarot deck)

Anne was amazed when we discussed the meaning of this card, as it precisely mirrored her current state of fearfulness. This card reflects Anne's trepidation and self doubts.  It is a powerful reminder to look deep into the source of one's fear and make some much needed internal changes.  The Five of Air also symbolizes ego centered conflicts with others, resulting in bitterness and no win situations.  In essence, this card suggests that Anne is experiencing mental agitation and feelings of loss of defeat.  I asked Anne how this card description resonated with her life and she stated, "Fear is a constant companion in my life these days.  I worry about my husband who is extremely overweight and very unhealthy at the moment.  I worry about my extended family.  I am worried about my kids adjusting to a major relocation.  I just feel anxious about everything lately!"  I explained to Anne that the Five of Air can be perceived as a gift...a wakeup call to heed the power of fear and anger over her life, and a powerful message to facilitate positive change in her life by facing her fears head on.  Air is symbolic of the mind and communication and five is the number of challenges and conflicts.  Anne will benefit by paying close attention to her self defeating thoughts and by challenging herself with positive affirmations.  She may also want to do some soul searching on her ability to express anger or on her ability to act on her own goals and desires.

2) Six of Fire (six of wands)

Anne is learning the lesson of victory and triumphing over her difficulties!  This card is suggestive of success, recognition, breakthroughs and positive developments of all kinds.  This particular card radiates warmth and beauty.  The flower is fully opening to the Sun's light, just as Anne is learning to open herself to an influx of confidence and light centered power.  Interestingly, Anne perceived the wands around the flower to be soaring away...to enable the flower to stand on its own.  She described the wands as staking the flower while it was vulnerable.  Anne is learning to trust her intuition and take the steps that will lead her out of fear and soaring into new beginnings, which will ultimately lead her to worldly success on her own terms.

3) Six of Earth (Six of Pentacles)

Anne smiled when she first gazed at this card.  In her own words she said, "I am moving towards embracing myself !".  Here is another card indicating success, mutual sharing and material gain.  The number six in numerology is symbolic of harmony, resolution of conflicts, truth, love, service and cooperation.  Others are drawn to those who emanate a six vibration because they radiate compassion and understanding.  Traditionally, the Six of Pentacles or Discs in the tarot signifies mutually beneficial relationships and giving and receiving on the physical or material plane.  Anne remarked that her priority at the moment was a resolution of  petty conflicts within her marriage.

4) Ace of Water (Ace of Cups)

Water represents the realm of emotions, and in this particular card, overflowing love from which all things spring forth.  The Ace of Water suggests that Anne's long term objective is to experience self love, trust and deep fulfillment on the emotional plane, whether in love, family, friendship or business.  All of Anne's thoughts and actions will be based on this worthy objective.  In this state, Anne will no longer be paralyzed with immobilizing fears.  Her feelings will flow freely and open the door to spiritual nourishment and a true exchange of love.  Anne found comfort and solace in this beautiful image of flowing and fertile nourishment.  She also remarked on the startling contrast between her current life direction and her long term objective.  She commented that the layout of the cards could be likened to an empowering mandala of her life, from which she could draw inspiration.

5) Father of Fire (King of Wands)

The tarot never ceases to amaze me!  How appropriate that Anne chose a fiery and pioneering card to represent what will help her maintain her long term objective.  Anne loved the vibrant, fiery flames in this card.  It suggests that Anne will maintain the Ace of Water connectedness and joy if she is metaphorically willing to walk through fire for what she believes in.  She is advised to take charge with generosity and courage when inspiration calls her.  In addition, taking a leadership role and/or creating something that will distinguish her from her peers will prove to be most beneficial to her own happiness in the future.  Vitality and self assurance are the key traits generously offered by the Father of Fire.  Anne summed up this card well by exclaiming..."I need to get fired up about something in a big way!".

In summary, this brief tarot reading provided a constructively, validating and empowering framework for Anne to recognize her current fear patterns, yet also provided her with hope and inspiration that her life was headed in a positively, life affirming direction.  She decided to purchase the Vision Quest Tarot deck so that the above images would be a constant reminder of her budding potential to live her life with grace and passion.
