PLUTO TRANSITS...

DRAMATIC NEW PERSPECTIVES

We are all on this roller coaster ride called LIFE where there are many twists and turns; some anticipated and some unexpected.  Just when we get settled on a particular path, along comes an evolutionary push, begrudgingly taking us out of our comfort zones.  This may come as a surprise and challenge us under difficult circumstances.  If we are co-creators of our lives, we eventually raise our conscious awareness to a higher, more refined level.  We may look back years later and actually feel gratitude and appreciation for the wounding (Chiron), whereby we "cross the bridge" to our higher intuition.  Our lives may start to flow and become deeply fulfilling on a soulful level.

When and why do these evolutionary leaps of dramatic change and growth occur?  Why do some individuals live a relatively peaceful and uneventful life for thirty years, while others die a thousand deaths (psychologically) in the same span of time?  Is it the luck of the draw or is there something far more sacred at work here?   One answer to this question is revealed when we take the natal birthchart and study how the current planetary patterns synthesize with our natal planetary patterns.

TRANSITS are the movement of planets in their regular cycles.  They form aspects which are geometric relationships with the planets in the natal chart.  The planets in our universe are not static, rather they are living, energetic forms which continue upon their journey rotating around the Sun.  As they make "contact" with our natal planets symbolized in our birthcharts, they resonate with our divinely unique planetary frequency.  They subsequently manifest this energy on several potential levels: physically, emotionally, intellectually,  psychologically, spiritually or psychically.  They may manifest as an actual event seemingly out of our control or as an inner state of feeling which prompts us to reevaluate our life goals.

Because the outer planets Uranus, Neptune and Pluto move so slowly, not all of us will experience the planetary archetypes in the same manner during our lifetime.  This is what makes each our lives unique and special.  We ALL have divine lessons to learn.  For example, some of us have lessons to do with authority and right use of will, yet others have poignant lessons about marriage and relating in partnership.

Let's use the planet PLUTO as an example.  Pluto is the archetype of power, transformation, death and rebirth, catharthis, purification and transmutation.  In mythology, we can see these themes portrayed in the Persephone and Hades myth, where Persephone is abducted by Hades at a very young age into the dark realm of the underworld.  During her absence, the bitter cold of winter reigned as Demeter mourned the loss of her daughter.  A compromise was reached and Perspehone was allowed to return from the depths for nine months every year.  Three out of twelve months would be spent underground as the wife of the dark and sinister figure Hades. Hence, we can see the cyclic law of death and rebirth reenacted each year in the depths of the winter season.  In our own lives,  we may experience the symbolic abduction into Hades realm through loss, sorrow, separation or grief.  Alternatively, we may enter the unconscious realm through profound dreams, therapy, spiritual experiences or psychic phenomena.  Ultimately, we gain clarity and a dramatic new perspective on life.  We emerge out of the dark into the light of day....feeling literally reborn.  We have spiraled up the evolutionary scale which is powerfully symbolized in the major tarot archetype called Judgment, which is associated with the planet Pluto and sign of Scorpio.J  Judgment symbolizes a rebirth and powerful realization.  It also represents a calling to recognize and utilize every facet of ourselves.  Circumstances offer us a new lease on life with a heightened spiritual outlook which was previously unrecognized.

Pluto rules the psychologically attuned sign of depth and intensity...Scorpio.  When it was discovered in 1930, the atom bomb (made from plutonium) was in its early stages,  the
United States was in the depths of depression, gangsterism was on the rise, Mafia figures were rearing their ugly heads and Hitler was evoking fear and terror.  At the same time, the psychoanalytical process was blooming through key spokesmen such as Freud, Adler and Jung.  Individuals like Carl Jung represent the incredible potential  of hidden knowledge and wisdom available to the Plutonian personality.  These individuals have the ability to channel their deep intensity and willingness to plumb the depths into psychology, science, research,  medicine and healing.

Pluto transits are very long and very slow.  It takes 248 years for Pluto to make a complete revolution around our birthcharts.  This means that the planet of significant transformation will not make contact with all our natal planets at the same time in the same way.  There are twelve houses in the natal horoscope representing twelve fields of experience in our lives ranging from identity, values and resources, relationships, belief systems all the way to our attitudes about religion and spirituality.  Depending upon what sign Pluto is transiting, it may take up to an average of 22 years for Pluto to transit one astrological house in the horoscope!  In an individual happens to have 4 or 5 planets in this one house, Pluto will completely transform everything those planetary principles represent as well as carthartically transform what the astrological house represents (see Astrological Alphabet for house descriptions).   The path to change will not be so cathartic for an individual with zero planets in that area of life development.

We all experience the path of transformation in a uniquely divine way.  Also, there may be a variety of transits and/or progressions occurring simultaneously which will define the themes of the current growth period.  It is important to remember that how an individual experiences a transit depends on many factors: age, emotional and psychological beliefs, educational experience, subconscious attitudes and so on.   Astrologer Shelley Jordan defines the significance of transits beautifully..."The transiting planets generate changes in our psychic states, which, when they interface with external reality in combination with our actions, precipitate as events.  Events are then, really, mere bi-products or our internal psycho-spiritual conditions.  To control and master the events in your life requires that you learn to master and control your own inner states."

So, how can knowledge of our own Pluto transits help us on our own paths?  The study of quantum physics in divination proposes that simply by recognizing or becoming consciously aware of a probable  situation or event  potentially changes the outcome.  Supposedly, our recognition or new awareness shatters the subatomic molecular structure of the probability!  It then becomes open to change and new direction of the energies.  For example, If one has an astrology consultation and becomes aware that transiting Pluto will conjoin his/her natal Sun in the 10th house of career one year from today, this person has already altered the likely probability of manifestation.  This person will have access to deep knowledge and understanding thus enhancing their ability to steer their life in an appropriate direction based on this new perspective.   Yes, Pluto will still bring transformation, however, the changes will precipitate a rich and symbolic storehouse of inner experiences resulting in an empowered new perspective.  In our human experience, change is inevitable.  Pluto represents our human urge to venture into taboo areas and bravely confront the dark wealth in the depths where we experience the power of deepest transformation.

At the time of this writing (August 2003), Pluto is at 17 degrees of Sagittarius precipitating great collective changes in religious beliefs, holy wars, education and travel among other things. Individually, at this time, those with planets in the middle degrees of mutable signs (Sagittarius, Gemini, Pisces and Virgo) will be feeling the powerful effects of deep and lasting change in various areas of their lives.  The following offer some basic examples of Pluto transits to our personal planets Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars and Jupiter:
