Astrology and Relationships (Part 2
of 3)
Have you ever met someone new and felt an immediate sense of easy
rapport, familiarity, compatibility or emotional affinity? Possibly you
felt as if you have known this person all your life though you only spent mere
hours together. It is very likely that your planet Venus (love,
attraction) in your natal horoscope conjoined, sextiled
or trined the other person's South Node (karmic point
symbolizing the past). Perhaps their Moon (cellular memories, instinctual
emotions, subconscious) conjoined your planet Venus in the 12th house of your
natal horoscope (past lives, spiritual or karmic connections, collective
unconscious). Maybe your Moon trined their
On the contrary, have you ever met someone new and felt an immediate dislike or
a sense of uneasiness or provocation? Chances are that person's Mars
squared your Moon or Saturn suggesting a lack of domestic harmony, emotional
misunderstandings and potentially explosive emotions. The Mars individual
would be perceived as overbearing, crude or quarrelsome. Maybe this
person's Mars squared your Mercury (communication), again resulting in
arguments and heated disagreements making it difficult to communicate in a
calm, rational manner. There is a need to cultivate patience and avoid
shouting at each other in times of strife. If their planet Pluto
(empowerment, control, manipulation) squares your Mars, you would likely
stubbornly resist any attempts by this person to remake or reform you in some
way. In extreme cases, this aspect can suggest coercion or physical
violence.
Welcome to the world of relationship synastry where
an astrologer compares two birthcharts to gain
insight into compatibility, areas of ease and attraction and areas of challenge
or stress. It is important to remember that what may constitute stress
and strife to one couple becomes exciting and stimulating to yet another
couple. It all depends on each individual's level of awareness, maturity
and philosophical outlook on life. I have met many couples who lovingly
take on the challenge to overcome some of the obstacles reflected by certain
astrological aspects.
In part one of relationship synastry we discussed the
initial evaluation of element (fire, earth, air and water) compatibility.
In this article, we will learn about planets in the houses and planets in
aspect as they relate to relationship astrology. Each horoscope consists
of 12 houses representing 12 major areas of life such as identity, home,
family, relationships, education, children and so
on. In synastry, the next step is to place the
planets of person A into the houses of person B, and vice versa, to see what
each brings to various areas of life. Let's look at a few brief examples
using the Sun and Moon which forms the primary matrix of each individual.
The Moon carries our soul's memories as well as our need for emotional
security. The Sun is our true light or the essence of our being. It
is how and where we seek to be a true individual.
Karen's Sun falls into David's 8th house of intimacy, joint resources, crises,
ego death and rebirth and deep transformations. Karen will undoubtedly
have an unforgettable impact on David psychically, emotionally and
physically. Whoever stimulates our Scorpionic
8th house makes us confront our deepest psychological depths where we are
driven to acknowledge our drives, feelings and instincts. Astrologer
Steven Forrest states..."A mate who transposes planets into your 8th house
has the key to the closet where you keep your skeletons, whether you like it or
not."
On a lighter note, Kelly's Moon falls into Richard's 3rd house of mindset,
communication and early education. Kelly will stimulate Richard's
educational horizons. She will arouse his curiosity or maybe exhaust him
with endless chatter or sources of information. In essence, the emotional
(Moon) reactions of Kelly influence the thinking and communication of Richard.
At the same time, Richard's ideas (3rd house) have an emotional impact on
Kelly.
Kim's Moon falls into Jim's 12th house of past lives, unconscious motivations,
spirituality and transcendence, thus producing a strong emotional and intuitive
link. Negatively, this placement could indicate self destructive
tendencies because the 12th house polarity may manifest as unconscious drives
or compulsions. This may feel like a karmic relationship where Kim
stimulates deep seated subconscious memories in Jim. If deception and dishonesty
is avoided, this placement denotes significant mutual compassion as well as a
strong psychic link where Kim senses how Jim is feeling though they may be
miles apart.
Joe's Sun falls into Kara's 7th house of partnerships and marriage. The
1st and 7th houses are considered to be the relationship axis in
astrology. When planets fall into this axis or aspect the ascendent/descendent points, the relationship is always
considered significant. If Joe's Sun is well aspected
with Kara's other planetary voices, there will be mutual enjoyment of each
others company. The Sun person represents something the 7th house person
needs and is drawn towards. If Joe's Sun also conjoins Kara's Moon in the
7th house, we would be assured of a compatible connection as well as a likely
marriage or fulfilling partnership.
The above placements are further elucidated by examining the aspects person A's
planets make to person B's planets. In
relationships, certain conjunctions, squares, quincunxes and oppositions denote
areas of dynamic tension or challenge. Other conjunctions, sextiles and trines suggest areas of flowing ease and
natural harmony. In our next example, Amy's Sun trines
John's Moon. This is one of the finest combinations for a
successful relationship because the Moon individual is very receptive to the
creative self expression of the Sun individual. John may have an
emotionally calming (Moon, trine) effect on Amy. If Amy's Sun were in a
conjunction with John's Moon, we would consider this a very significant
connection where both Amy and John are deeply in tune with each other.
This is because conjunctions bring the same element together suggesting a
powerful expression of that particular energy.
If Richard's Moon is in square (tension) aspect to Kelly's Moon, challenges to
domestic harmony are suggested. According to professional astrologer Noel
Tyl, the Moon represents our personality's reigning
need above all else. This aspect suggests difficulties understanding each
other's feelings and emotional responses. Richard and Kelly may not agree
about family or domestic affairs (Moon) (square). Also, if their Moons
are in fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius) they will each stubbornly
hold on to their emotional habits or attitudes. On the other hand, If
their Moons conjoined, sextiled or trined each other, they would be assured of emotional
compatibility and mutual understanding and cooperation.
In our last example, Karen's Moon trines (harmony) David's Mars (action)
suggesting that David will energize (Mars) Karen into greater self
confidence. Also, Karen will soothe and calm (Moon) David as well as
provide a base of operations or home (Moon) for David's work (Mars). This
is an excellent aspect for joint home improvement projects or professional
endeavors.
We could go on and on with many possibilities. Interaspects
from Saturn, Chiron, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto to personal planets are also
VERY important and most revealing. Relationships may have a Saturnian theme (karma, work, duty and responsibility), a Chironian theme (wounding, healing, integration), a Uranian theme (rebellious, unconventional or unique), a
Neptunian theme (soulmates, creative, artistic,
codependent or addictive) or a Plutonian theme (empowering, ego death and
rebirth through major change or controlling and manipulative). Please
stay tuned for part 3 where we will take a look at the composite chart which is
the horoscope of the couple's natal energies combined....fascinating and
revealing!
